Utah St. Mary Capital Campaign

Tax deductible
Saint Mary Ethiopian Tewahedo Orthodox Church of Utah (Utah St. Mary) is reaching out to everyone to plead for their kind and generous support towards the purchase of a church building in Salt Lake City. The building has asking price of $250,000 with an estimated required downpayment of $50,000.

St. Mary of Utah is an Ethiopian Tewahedo Orthodox Church established as a small non-profit in 2007 by members of the Ethiopian community in Utah. The church was established to help followers of the Ethiopian Tewahedo faith and their families stay connected to their monastic traditions and spiritual heritage. St. Mary of Utah conducts regular weekend worship services and gather all families and their children together during numerous festivities thoroughtout the year.

Despite its proud and noble missions however, St. Mary of Utah does not own a building to conduct services and to house its sacred relics and its priest. Nor does it have the capital adequate enough to acquire needed property. At the moment, weekend worship and services are delivered from a partially ruined building located in the city of Layton. The church’s holy artifacts and the Tabot also reside in this temporary location. It is a small and worn out building, in need of constant repair. The roof of the building leaks periodically, endangering the Tabot and the relics of the church. The constant maintenance requirements have depleted the church’s small budget, further weakening the ability of the church to exist.

Despite all its cherished missions and its goals of promoting positive values and good citizenship among families and children, Utah St. Mary faces significant budgetary constraints and lacks the capital necessary to make the purchase. Utah St. Mary’s current state is unsustainable. Monthly dues and gifts from members are the sole sources by which the church maintains its current existence. These pay for a fulltime position of an Ethiopian priest and for all other expenses of the church, leaving the church with paltry savings.

Utah St. Mary appeals to everyone to support its continued existence and to help permanently move the church to an honorable, accommodative, and livable place.

Given Utah St. Mary’s noble missions and the deep desire to serve the educational, cultural, and spiritual needs of all diverse constituents, we believe that all individuals, societies, and benefactors will find it worthy to support the small and struggling but the highly promising and the purpose driven Ethiopian Church in Utah.
