Hello fellow sailors, friends, family, and supporters;
First and foremost, thank you to all who have helped us in the past and to those helping us now. Within the last year, the University of Toledo Sailing Club has only grown, with trips to more and newer regattas for the team. Since the beginning of 2016, UTSC has branched out to having a Women’s team and we competed in the Women’s Qualifiers in April as well as making our first appearance at Wisco Women’s in October. We finished up the year ranking 6th in co-ed for the MCSA as well as ranking 5th for Women’s in our conference. These rankings mean a lot to us and hopefully our supporters are just as excited and are looking forward to our bright futures. However, in order to make our team prepared and keep it going for future classes, we need help. We receive little funding from the University and we rely heavily on our fundraising efforts, so every donation is very much appreciated.
The boats we use for practice (and hopefully a regatta in the future) are Flying Juniors (FJ’s) that have seen better days. Most are missing crucial hardware that costs a pretty penny, all in all adding up to over $700. We are also on the lookout for new FJ’s and new sails to enhance our fleet for our own use as well as to better our chances for holding a regatta in the future. In order for us to have more beneficial practices in turn making us a better team, we must fix these boats as soon as we can. Along with fixing up boats, we are in desperate need of a coach boat. Without one, we are limited to only practicing when the wind is light but steady or when the channel is available. If we had a coach boat, our practices would be more beneficial, more would get to practice in the boats, and we would be safer in case of an emergency on the water.
One of our biggest items we need to cover is something new to the team, and that is boat insurance. We have partnered with The Gowrie Group and their Burgee Program for organizations and yacht clubs. They have agreed to help us make sure that we are covered on and off the water, and on our boat or yours. We have worked out the numbers and we receive a nice discount for being a US Sailing registered team, however, this million dollar policy and its great benefits, come at a cost to us. Our yearly cost for this insurance is about $2000 a year.
While we can raise the dues for the team, we pride ourselves on being the most affordable sports club on UT’s campus. We have done all we can in our power to increase our budget through the University but there is only so much money to go around between all of the sports clubs. This is why we are turning towards fundraising. We are going to take all of the money and set aside payments for insurance for future years. We will be setting aside a spending budget for repair and updates to our boats. This way we can you the little we get from the university and pay for our travels and other operating expenses. We are going to expanding all of our efforts to get out and raise as much as we can to help make sure this team can stay in the black for years to come.
All in all, with your donation you will be helping a growing sailing team become better and more sustaining for future classes which in turn welcomes more and more people to the beautiful, lifelong sport of sailing.
