Urgent! Help to save Sudarat the elephant!

Hello, we are Samui Elephant Haven, an elephant sanctuary in Koh Samui, Thailand that gives homes to rescued elephants from the tourism industry. They get to live out the rest of their lives free from abuse, to roam free and receive all the care and love they need.

We are currently desperately trying to save an elephant called Sudarat from going back to work in the tourism industry. She came to us 3 years ago to be cared for as her owner could no longer provide the care she needed. He was unwilling to sell her at the time so legally still owns her. Just this past week he informed us that he was coming to take her back at the beginning of October unless we could raise $47,000 to buy her.

This is a huge sum but we urgently need to try and raise this money before the end of the month. Sudarat has experienced freedom and love for three years surrounded by her elephant family of four other elephants and it would be desperately cruel to take her away from this life that she has come to know. We just cannot allow her to be taken away from her home.

The trauma to her will be unthinkable, not to mention to her family of elephants who will be deeply traumatised at her departure. Elephants form exceptionally close bonds and this will cause considerable suffering amongst all of them.

Sudarat would have to travel a great distance, in a truck, to get to her previous home and being in her 50’s with leg problems this would be very traumatising and painful for her.

Once there she would be chained, feel bull hooks once more and used immediately for tourism. And sadly, she would also be alone. Elephants need company, they are not solitary animals, so she would indeed fall into a deep depression. We cannot allow this suffering to happen to her!

We have been given the opportunity to keep her and we are desperately doing all we can to make this possible for her but we can’t do it alone and we only have until the end of the month to try and save her.
