Steve's Journey

On June 25 of 2018, our world stopped. Everything changed, nothing seemed real, we didn't know how we would get through the devastation our family had just experienced. Our rock was cracking, our foundation was splitting. Steve Conley - father, husband, grandfather and friend - a navy veteran, someone we never imagined would have to go through something like this was struck with the unthinkable. In May, the family noticed Steve had lost weight and it had become far more extreme than any healthy weight-loss. In only 6 months, he had lost over 90 pounds. His esophagus, it seemed, had closed to the point of rejecting solid foods. He was able to eat Ramen noodles in small amounts, but not much else. Solid foods could not be kept down and often resulted in sleepless nights. We expected it was simply a stricture, something that a small scope and a short office visit could fix. After prompting from his family, he went to the Urgent Care center for an appointment, a check up. He was sent for an endoscopic procedure, however, they could not get the scope down his throat and it was there that they discovered a mass on his esophagus. A short time later, June 25th he was diagnosed with advanced cancer. While we are unable to tell exactly how severe this is until the PET scan results come in, multiple doctors have stated this is a stage 3 or worse esophageal cancer that has spread to at least one lymph node. The way to treat this particular case is chemo, radiation and possibly the removal of his esophagus. As he is currently unable to eat and has little to no nutrition and strength, a feeding tube will be inserted, as well, to help him build the strength to fight this cancer and endure the chemo. This will likely make Steve unable to work. Due to doctor's appointments, testing and treatments our family has already lost a substantial amount of our income and the medical bills will become astronomical. We are asking for any and all help from anyone willing to show their support. Donations will be used to help pay for Steve's medical needs and treatments and for financial support due to loss of income. We know that not everyone can support financially, and we understand that completely. Prayers and good thoughts are just as appreciated. Every little bit helps!
