UPA Mission Trip with ASP

Donation protected
UPDATE: This is campaign manager, Evan Robinson-Johnson. For transparency, let it be known that my dad, Doug Robinson-Johnson, the pastor of UPA is the beneficiary of this account, and will be the individual to withdraw the money. This is because he has to give the money to ASP, to pay for our trip. Anyone with questions should comment on this page.

Youth from the United Parish of Auburndale (UPA) in Auburndale, MA, will be spending the last week of June helping to improve housing in rural Appalachia.

This will be the first time in many years that our youth group at the UPA has had the opportunity to engage in a week of service.

We will be volunteering with Appalachia Service Project (ASP) in West Virginia., which is a Home Repair Ministry that brings thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair
homes for low-income families. The project makes homes warmer, safer and drier for families and provides
transformational service experiences for volunteers.

ASP was founded in 1969 by the Reverend Glenn “Tex” Evans, to connect the energy of youth with the deep needs of the poor. Since then, 377,412 volunteers have repaired 17,373 homes, and in the process, Appalachian families, volunteers, and staff have benefitted immeasurably. Over 16,000 volunteers will
participate in ASP during 2017.

Part of our journey will be an exploration of the nature of poverty in Appalachia. We will be entering the communities and homes of Central Appalachia with sensitivity and concern: a readiness to accept people where they are and who they are.

We will be working on a variety of different projects, including roofing, painting, strengthening foundations,
patching leaks, building walls, repairing stairs, digging flood channels and installing plumbing.

The cost for travel, room and board (most likely sleeping in a gymnasium), van rentals and materials is about $1,000.00 per person. Any extra funds we can raise will go directly to additional and higher quality
building materials.

Your donation of any amount is important and appreciated. Thank you for considering a donation.
