Hi, my name is Derek Ray Kirkman
I play bass in the John Bunzli Band and am proud to call him a great friend.
John suffered a life threatening fall at the end of August and broke his right eardrum, suffered a severe concussion, brain hemorrhaging and damage to his right optic nerve.
As a result he lost huge chunks of memory, hearing and had vision deterioration and lost much energy and stamina
He has had an amazing recovery and is well on his way to getting back to normal.
The doctors say that his love of music and his stubborn resolve to be able to get back to gigging and teaching have contributed to an accelerated recovery, reaching levels of come back in weeks that might have lasted months based on the severity of the injury.
His hearing has recovered, his memory is coming back and he is slowly regaining his strength.
Unfortunately he has suffered permanent vision deterioration.
We are very happy to have John back and the band has started playing full gigs again!
Even though John has medical insurance, the bills related to this injury were huge.
He ended up in the Hospital for three days and has had numerous follow up appointments and continues to be treated by a cognitive therapist and will require new eyeware to correct his vision.
John’s share of these bills will total his maximum out of pocket expenses of $4000 plus vision costs.
John has a part time job and teaches guitar and ukulele lessons and plays gigs with his band and for other musicians as well.
Nonetheless he lost two months of work, lessons and gigs and is unprepared and unable to meet these unexpected expenses.
The band and a bunch of his friends are hosting a fundraising concert on November 24th at the 300 Suns Brewery in Longmont Colorado. This Go Fund me Page offers the ability for people attending the concert to make donations on their credit card. There will also be a live feed of the show for folks who want to watch but are too far away to attend. It will also be recorded so that people can watch after the fact.
Myself, his band and all his music community friends are asking you to support John by attending the concert if you can, and making donations to this page to help him cover these large expenses. Any donation you can give is welcome and we appreciate your support very much.
