Unmute Magazine

Donation protected
Back in early spring 2020 around the time of the Black Lives Matter movement, I noticed many music writers and journalists from various publications on social media offering support in the form of writing music reviews, press releases, mentoring, and more, all specifically for BIPOC. I replied to many and received one reply only. After that frustrating experience, I thought to myself, I write, so why not start my own publication featuring creatives?

My mission is to produce Unmute Magazine, a digital magazine mainly by and for BIPOC artists. Exclusivity is not the goal because I strongly believe in the importance of engaging in continued discussions involving all races and ethnicities, surrounding inequity. However, Unmute Magazine exists to primarily lift the voices of creatives (i.e. musicians, producers, sound engineers,  poets, dancers, and writers) who have been historically marginalized, although,  BIPOC allies will be welcomed. Collectively, I feel that we can achieve more through multiple voices and the aim of Unmute Magazine is to highlight the diverse art that underrepresented creatives are making and to serve as a resource for artists to discover and potentially collaborate with one another.

I am driven to help boost the voice of my fellow BIPOC creatives and feel it is urgent, especially during these challenging times. This GoFundme starts intentionally on the first day of Black History Month but in acknowledgment that the work and recognition extend far beyond. Since the BLM moment, various organizations and companies have shared eloquent mission statements but whether that has led to significant advancement for BIPOC remains to be seen. I can no longer sit patiently hoping that opportunities will magically be created for BIPOC artists. Instead, I am compelled towards taking action.  However, I can't do this alone. Please help support this initiative by making a donation.  Even if it is $1, any amount helps. Funds will support further development and maintenance of Unmute Magazine, pay for an editing service, and MOST importantly will provide compensation to contributing creatives for their time and effort.

Thank you so much,
