Baby Rajani battles Brain Injury & Cerebral Palsy

Donation protected

Rajani Kirpa Kaur (our Queen of Compassion)  is marking her first birthday this June 17th, 2021, having fought her way into this world after being deprived of oxygen at birth a year ago.

One year ago, her mother Preet suffered a life-threatening birth trauma at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. Preet received 4 pints of blood to save her life and Rajani was resuscitated and then both were transferred from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Rajani underwent 72 hours of cool cap therapy to prevent further brain injury and she was unable to drink liquids by mouth unless they were thickened. After special treatments and 6 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Rajani was able to join her family at home after having surgery to insert a G tube for feeding. Adding to all this, late last year Rajani and Preet were diagnosed with Covid-19 and went into isolation. Thankfully they recovered.

Rajani was eventually diagnosed with HIE (hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy). Every week since, Rajani has seen several specialists, including feeding therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and water therapy. She has also undergone corrective eye surgery and her doctors believe she is at a severe risk of seizures. She has recently been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Her neurological tests show her presenting as a quadraplegic, resulting in the long-term need for a wheelchair, additional adaptive equipment and environmental modifications.

Rajani has faced more medical challenges in a year than most of us will experience in a lifetime.

Rajani is a little superhero who continues to surprise her doctors and family as her drive to be increasingly independent continues daily. Preet and Harprit (Rajani’s dad) have amazingly lifted Rajani up and provided all of the love, support and medical attention that she has needed over the past year. All while lovingly supporting Prabnoor, Rajani’s jovial and caring two year old sister.

Rajani will need a lifetime of medical interventions, therapies and special equipment. Preet, a University Professor who holds a PhD, has completely pivoted to become a full-time caregiver, losing her income in the process.

We as friends of this beautiful and resilient immigrant family hailing from Canada and the United Kingdom, living thousands of miles away from their respective families, humbly request you to help with the burgeoning financial costs of medical and related care in the coming months and years to support the family and give Rajani every possible chance to survive and live her best life.

Father's Day Update:

In the spirit of Father's Day we share with you a little glimpse of Harprit who has been an amazing father to Rajani and Prabnoor. Along with Preet he has created a loving oasis for Rajani and Prabnoor despite all the challenges of the last year. To all of you who have contributed to this campaign our Big Thank You!

Keep your support coming so we can reach our campaign goal for this loving and resilient family.
