ELI   LISTENING  TO  HIS  NEW  HEART  FOR  THE  FIRST  TIME - photo

13 year old Eli Bunnell is a kind and caring boy who has lived his whole life with a rare, one of a kind heart disease. He has lived his life to the fullest, drumming on two Native American Pow Wow drums from the age of 2 ½ years old,  playing ice hockey, and enjoying his family and friends. Eli was a child ambassador for CHaD  (Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock) in their Buddy Program and he threw the First Pitch at the 2018 Battle of the Badges Baseball Game. Eli faced his many hospitalizations, procedures, and operations with courage and grace. In August of 2018 his heart took a drastic turn for the worst, and he was diagnosed with End Stage Myocardial Failure and put on the UNOS heart transplant waiting list. Many prayers were answered on October 8th when Eli was given the lifesaving gift of a new heart.

The immunosuppressant medications that Eli has to take help to prevent his body from rejecting his new heart. They also increase his risk for infection from contact with individuals and from the environment. Because of this, it is critical that a post-transplant patient live in a home that is free of molds, mildews, and as much as possible bacteria and viruses.

Eli’s family home had a major roof failure which caused wet and moldy insulation and ceilings throughout the house, as well as some rot around doors and windows. The 40 year old kitchen has also suffered water damage and needs to be replaced. Their homeowners insurance will not allow the claim and his family does not have the financial resources to repair their home. Mice have moved into this country home and have compounded the problem. The house is a dangerous environment for Eli to be in and he cannot come home.  Winter is closing in and the work needs to start on the house. We are hoping to raise enough money to renovate the house so that Eli can come home to his family, friends, school, and community.  Funds are urgently needed now to begin the renovations.

Eli and his mother are currently living in an apartment in Boston, close to Boston Children's Hospital,  while Eli has  frequent post-transplant follow-up visits at the hospital.  A foundation has graciously covered the cost of this apartment for them. However, this is only a short term living situation . The ability to bring Eli home after his courageous battle with lifelong heart disease and transplant would mean more to Eli and our family than anyone could imagine. All donations are greatly appreciated.  Those that wish to make a direct donation can go to any branch of Peoples United Bank and make a donation to Rex and Anne Bunnell. This checking account is noted for bank use as “ Eli’s Homecoming”. With Much Gratitude, Rex and Anne Bunnell.
