In September 2013, Jo Uberuaga had a seizure and was taken to the hospital. After examination and MRI, a cranial biopsy diagnosed her with anaplastic astrocytoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer with a low level survival rate without removal. The position of the tumor made surgical removal impossible and the course of treatment decided centered around methods of shrinking the tumor. 7 weeks of radiation, multiple months of various chemotherapy, and 5 rounds of cyber knife pinpoint radiation followed through November 2014.
In the midst of Jo's treatment, the Uberuaga family received a second blow when her husband John was diagnosed with throat cancer. John's cancer was treated through chemotherapy and radiation and shows positive results.
Determined to save her life, John has been with Jo every step of the way, refusing to give up hope and seeking out new treatment options. His dedication shows promise: Jo was recently chosen as a candidate for experimental treatment at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston, TX. Insurance will not cover the treatment. The treatment alone costs $35,000 per month for 4 kinds of medication and Avastin infusion in addition to the costs of temporarily relocating to Houston.
Back to back medical crises paired with John's inability to work while both taking care of Jo and being a patient during his own several months of treatment have depleted the family's savings. Every little bit helps, whether it be financial or prayers. Please consider donating to this amazing family as they navigate the next steps in Jo's ongoing treatment plan.
