We have been so touched by the overwhelming support that the city of Rochester has shown us this past weekend. It has been really heartwarming to know that we mean as much to the people of Rochester as they do to us.
We really want to thank Jeff Johnson (for posting his story), Rachel Ennis (for reaching out to KTTC), and Chadwick Kisilewski (for kickstarting the initial GoFundMe). We also want to give our most heartfelt thanks to everyone who had previously donated. We hope to keep up the momentum by continuing to ask for your support to help keep Cheap Charlie's stay a landmark in Rochester. My dad, David Tran, took over this modest diner in 1998, but it was a hard road to get there. He escaped Vietnam shortly after the Fall of Saigon, and after a week in a makeshift raft in the ocean and years in several refugee camps, he arrived in Minnesota with literally nothing to his name. Through hard work, resilience, and a lot of luck, my dad was able to eventually own his own business and truly realize his American Dream. He built a life for us here, and I know that many of the opportunities I've had in my life have been because of all he has sacrificed.
But, like so many other small businesses, all this is at risk due to COVID and the huge negative impact it has had on the economy. Unable to pay for our staff, we have sadly had to lay off our employees, and up until this weekend, my parents have been running the restaurant themselves. A true mom and pop shop. If we don't raise the funds to cover our accruing expenses, we could be out of business within the next few months.
So while we love seeing your faces in the restaurant, we know these are hard times for everyone. The COVID pandemic has affected us all in ways we never could have imagined. If you can't visit us, please consider donating or buying a giftcard for later use (there will be life after COVID!). All funds will go directly towards Cheap Charlie's in the form of paying our rent, overhead expenses, and food and supplies to keep us afloat.
No donation is too small! You'll not only be helping Cheap Charlie's survive, but you'll also be helping our American Dream survive.
