Typhoon Mawar Relief

On May 23-24, the island of Guam was battered by Typhoon Mawar. This was the largest storm our beautiful island has seen in decades, with sustained winds up to 150mph. Roofs were ripped from homes, trees were uprooted and shredded. Storm surges and flooding have left much of the island underwater. Many are still without power. People were evacuated to shelters across the island. The destruction and devastation is overwhelming. As of this Friday, we are waking up still to aftermath winds while trying to assess the damage.

And of course.. the dogs. Guam has approximately 70,000 dogs, many free-roaming or stray. Our island's only animal shelter, Guam Animals In Need (GAIN), has been more or less destroyed. All dog kennels at GAIN are outdoors with rin roofs, which now lie in the parking lot and scattered across the property. The fence surrounding the property and dog park is ruined. Trees are uprooted. Electric wires are down on the chain link fencing surrounding the property, and we were advised not to enter due to risk of electrocution. We hope to enter soon, but of course the Guam Power Authority team is very busy now. Fortunately we evacuated all animals into storm fosters before this mess hit, but of course our staff found a dog abandoned in a cage in the parking lot when we went to evaluate the damage. Ahhh. It never stops

We want to get GAIN functional as quickly as possible so we can not only take in strays, but also hopefully temporarily host pets of displaced families. Please consider donating to help with our efforts rebuilding in the aftermath of this destructive storm.

How is Boonie Flight Project involved? We are part of GAIN. We pull all flight dogs from GAIN. Our co-founder Kelsey works there, and other co-founder Lauren is the GAIN board president. We are very closely intertwined and heartbroken to see our shelter crushed.
