Tyalgum Shops Fire Recovery
Donation protected
On Tuesday August 20th a fire started at our Village corner, burning down two business premises to the ground, and destroying a third heritage-listed building.
These buildings housed three locally-owned businesses - Paddington of Tyalgum, The Orpheum Bookshop and Osiris Jewellery. The fourth business on this block - Somewhere in the Sunshine, is now also required to vacate premises due to asbestos contamination on the site.
We have just learnt that our landlord was not insured and therefore in order to safely clear this site of the ruins and subsequently rebuild, we will need to find a way to raise the funds as a community.
We have been receiving offers of support in kind from local architects, painters and builders to help us rebuild, but we are understanding the costs to clear the site, purchase concrete to create a solid slab for the buildings, and subsequent material costs is being estimated at around $60,000.
We ask that people share this campaign far and wide to help us reach this goal and rebuild our little retail corner in an enhancing and heritage- style of building that retains the overall character of our Village.
