Tuition Fee Payment Help Request

Hi To You All Out There

Welcome to my campaign.

My name is Tendai Rukasha a brain tumour survivor, a fighter, a hard worker with resilience, patience, trustworthy and honest. I am currently in my final year of my PhD and need your financial support.  In 2017 I received an offer from Keele University and I enrolled for a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science in the School of Computing and Mathematics.  My Thesis area of Research is Wearable Technology. My research is on the Evaluation of Wearable Epileptic Seizure Monitors, focusing on performance reporting, usability, interface evaluation, and stakeholder evaluation. Reliability seizure detection in everyday life is difficult but important to ensure the devices do not miss seizure and lower false alarms.

As an individual with epilepsy, I have had episodes were I required assistance, having someone to come to my aid helped me to avoid injury and harm to others and to myself.  The study builds upon my desire to learn about my limitations and to appreciate the intricacies and benefits of scientific research. Wearable devices assist in detecting epileptic seizures and aiding assistance when a person has a seizure and is not able to ask for help. This has motivated me to want to acquire more knowledge in the subject area.

I am an international student and not entitled to a student loan or other benefits hence the need to ask for your financial support, in order to pay University Tuition fees and accommodation.

I have applied to different funding bodies, scholarships, and fellowships but because of the competitiveness of the funding, it has been very difficult for me to get one. I continue to apply for additional funding, scholarships, and fellowships.

I should be finalizing and submitting my PhD this December or beginning of January, therefore, I do not have any other way of fully paying off my tuition fees and accommodation but to crowdfund.

Please donate whatever you can.

Thank you so much for your support.

About Tendai Rukasha

What I still remember about my brain Tumour Dilemma:

When I was around 11 years old and very young to make any crucial decisions was when my dilemma started. It all started with a slight headache at school during swimming lessons. I thought it was just the usual fatigue and I never bothered to alert the teachers. The following morning I woke up and was a bit tired and felt some heaviness in my head like I was about to faint. I carried on with the daily routine of going to school as my parents were waiting to drop me at school before they rushed to work. When I was at school the headache persisted and I could not see properly at this time. I was having problems just to walk, and I was experiencing some dizziness.  The teacher took me to the school sickbay and immediately called my parents to come to pick me up as my body temperature had short to 38 degrees Celsius.  My parents came and took me to the family Doctor who recommended hospital admission straightaway.  In the hospital, my parents’ say I was referred to five Doctors one after the other till the last Doctor to see me recommended an operation on my head after some head CT Scan done same day.   The Doctor s diagnosed a brain tumour. The Doctor said that the boil in my head was close to the brain and was about to burst and I needed an operation immediately. This is when my dilemma began. The operations done for the complete process were two. I spent three weeks in intensive care. My parents narrated that bone was removed from my head.  , Up till now, I live without that born on my head. Later on while out of the hospital at home, I started experiencing bouts of fits that were uncontrollable. My family doctor referred me to a specialist doctor who performed an EEG scan on my head; this resulted in me being subscribed permanent medication for seizure control.  My Doctor advised no more physical and contact sports. The Doctor, however, reassured me that I can continue with swimming. The aid of EEG gave me the opportunity to get the right medication at the right time. I wanted to learn more about EEG machine that aided in suppressing seizures which were constantly affecting my studies.  As I look back a device that could detect and record seizure patterns would have been convenient.

What my parents say.

The ethos of hard work, resilience persistence and patience were instilled in Tendai from infancy.  Tendai always admired the patience, politeness and warmth associated with the nursing profession.  This was a result of her experience with nurses during her long sickness and a subsequent long stay in the hospital.  During her primary school years, Tendai was an excellent hockey player and enjoyed swimming.  In 2001 Tendai underwent a major neurosurgical operation that resulted in her being advised to drop contact sports at school.  In 2001 Tendai suffered left hemiplegia and was referred to St Giles Medical Rehabilitation Centre to undergo physiotherapy and occupational therapy and she made good progress.

My siblings say

Our parents encouraged and supported Tendai to become what she is today. A well-educated brain tumour survivor.  Tendai was motivated to take her Christianity faith first as it was only God who saved her from her childhood dilemma. Tendai has been a devout Christian who participated in all church formation activities despite the epileptic seizures she faced in public. Tendai was encouraged to share her dilemma and support others to understand life from a different perspective. Tendai s dilemma became our motivating factor to achieve high educational.  Tendai’s parents supported her spiritually by sharing their faith in a God of miracles assuring Tendai that she will achieve all she can with persistence and hard work.
