Tropical Storm Damage Relief - Guadalupana, Merida

Donation protected
Please donate to help the people of La Guadalupana, a neighborhood in the south of Mérida, MX, in the aftermath of tropical storm Cristobal.

From January through March, our study abroad group worked with over a hundred children in Guadalupana. We learned so much from them and worked with the families to determine what kind of educational resources they would need now and in the future. Now they need our help on a more tangible level.

Much of the houses in Guadalupana are semi-permanent structures with dirt or concrete floors. They have experienced flooding and destruction. They will use the money we donate to get shoes, blankets, toiletries, food, and to repair their damaged homes, as well as reinforce them for the coming hurricane season. They have been using wooden pallets to raise mattresses so they aren't ruined by stormwater, and can also use money to get more of these.

We are leaving it up to the mothers of the community, who are critical community leaders, to distribute the money, which they have consistently done well in the past.

Below are some pictures of the aftermath of the storm, as well as a photo of the families lined up to receive small packages of sanitary products at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. On top of the storm, they are still combating illness and poverty.
