Tropic Essences Fair Trade Farmers Accident Fund

We are raising money for Tropic Essences chia seed farmers in Nicaragua. Unfortunately, the most recent chia farmer's payment delivery was forcibly stolen at gunpoint. The person responsible for delivering the payments was shot at and robbed, and the seasonal payment – customarily paid in cash, due to lack of banking access in the area – was taken.

Due to the current socio-political upheaval in Nicaragua, now compounded by the world-wide epidemic, things have been especially difficult for these farmers. The Fair Trade Sustainability Alliance is supporting this crowdfunding campaign in order to help this exceptional, community-oriented farming operation survive a very difficult set of circumstances.

This campaign is only raising a portion of what was lost, but we hope that it will help mitigate the hardship created by this awful event in these especially trying and uncertain times. We ask that you please donate what you can to help support the farmers and the nearly 100 families in the remote highlands who rely on Tropic Essences for employment and community support.

Tropic Essences Chia is committed to treating their workers fairly, as demonstrated by their FairTSA Fair Trade certification. Each year the farmer group decides on a sustainable project to improve their community through the Fair Trade funding.
