Trips for our Refugee Farm Teens

Hello Friends!

So this summer we have 11 refugee teens working for the Grow Philly/ Novick Family Urban Farm.

We need your help to ensure the teens get a break from the hot, tireless sun and get out of the city to both educational and fun trips. 

These teens are all refugees from Burma and Congo. For all of them, it is their first job. Most have never left South Philly and have never been to the beach, river or other urban and rural farms.

The teens work very hard on the farm planting, harvesting, and maintaining a diversity of fresh, healthy crops. They manage a low-income farm stand in which we sell culturally appropriate fruits and vegetables to families in the neighborhood.
 
Students are trained in all aspects of organic farming, marketing, customer relations and more. Last year, they helped to donate over 10,000 pounds of produce locally and sell more than 9,000 pounds

The students are troopers and put up with a very hot farm with little shade. As a reward and to broaden the educational experience, we really want to be able to take them on trips to other local farms, the beach, and possibly a nature hike. The couple trips we took were a huge part of the summer program last year and we hope to develop and expand on this. Some trips in Philly will allow students to meet other teens doing similar farming and food justice work, chefs, or innovative sites in Philly. Larger day trips will get us out of the city to enjoy and bond as a group. Team development and bonding are a part of each trip

The cost for trips add up quickly with rental vans, gas, food, supplies for the trips, etc.
