Trip to Visit my Ailing Mother

The Bottom Line
My name is Michaela, and I am starting this fund in order to purchase a plane ticket so that I can care for my ailing mother who lives in my hometown city of Frydek-Mistek, Czech Republic.

The Backstory
In 1993, I came to this amazing country, excited to finally live with my husband and work hard to build our American Dream. But with this great future ahead of me, it came with a price for my mom. As her only child, my mom, who raised me on her own from the moment I was born, lost her only companion and best friend due to the great ocean that now separates us. I always made sure to keep in contact with her, either through weekly phone calls, and later, as technology improved, through Skype chats and text messages.

I felt like everything was looking up, as I started to find success in this new country that has truly become home and start my own family here. However, everything came crashing down as I soon became a single mother, just like my own mom. I was forced to start again, looking for any way to stay on my feet and support my child. I picked up a new job, and soon two, which I still continue to work at today. It has now been 14 years, and, despite working two jobs day in and day out, I continue to live paycheck to paycheck. Just when I feel like I am starting to get ahead, another punch puts me two steps back, from car trouble to helping my daughter with her own college expenses. And, through all of the ups and downs, my mom, despite being thousands of miles away, has always been there for me to tell me on every phone call that I can do anything.

The last time I had the opportunity to visit my mom was in 2006. I scraped together all the money I could so that I could reunite with my mom and finally have my American daughter meet her grandmother -- to experience her Czech roots. It was great to see my mom after all those years. Every penny that I pinched together in order to pay for the trip was worth it with all the memories that we created together -- from my daughter seeing mountains and castles in person for the first time in her life to enjoying her grandma's traditional Czech cooking that I remembered from my childhood.

Unfortunately, I have not been back since. I get by with the weekly phone calls, always checking in to see how my mom is doing. Every year, I plan to put enough money aside in order to go back and visit my mom. But, year after year, the money is used up, whether it be for medical expenses, car trouble, or providing for my daughter. Of course I have always wanted to visit my mom again, but that want has now turned into a need. For the past year, my mom's health has been deteriorating. Her initial seemingly harmless complaints of leg pain and back aches have continued and grown worse, hindering my mom's ability to walk and care for herself. She now remains mostly bedridden, receiving any help she can get from friends and neighbors, who she relies on more and more every passing week. Her doctors say that her spine requires multiple surgeries, which she cannot afford at this time. So she is managing her pain with medications that can only do so much.

I feel that now, more than ever, I must return to my mom. I plan to set up some sort of home care for her so that I know that she is getting what she needs when I am not there. With the holidays approaching, I want to celebrate with my mom and create memories that I can cherish after she is long gone. I feel that if I do not return now, then my chance to reunite with my mom will slip right out of my hands.

How You Can Help
All of the funds that I receive will go towards buying my plane ticket to Vienna, Austria, from which I will travel by train to my hometown. Any amount that you can donate to my fund would mean the world to me and my mom. If I am successful and make it back to my mom, I would be honored to send you a picture of her and I together, if you provide your information.

With more thanks than I could possibly put into words,
Michaela
