Trip to shadow abroad in Greece

Dear friends, family, and acquaintances,
I am thrilled to share with you all, that I have been offered the opportunity of a lifetime. I was recently accepted into The Atlantis project. Through the Atlantis Project and hopefully the help of all of you, I will be going to Athens, Greece for three weeks this summer to shadow physicians at Agia Sophia Children’s Hospital.
As many of you know, and for those of you who do not, I am currently finishing up the last semester of my junior year pursing a Bachelor of Science in chemistry with an emphasis in biochemistry at Lindenwood University. I am on a pre-med track and aspire to be a surgeon. Medical schools look for many of things on a resume, and shadowing hours are a big requirement they look for. Between school, field hockey, work, volunteering, and the hospitals themselves having the regulations they do, it is very hard to get shadowing hours.
I first heard about the Atlantis Project online my freshman year of college. I looked into it, but I was hesitant because I had never heard of anyone going and because of money. Last summer a mutual friend, who was also a pre-med student that attended Lindenwood University, went to Athens, Greece. I saw his pictures and spoke to him about the experiences he had while he was there, and I knew I had to look further into it. When I looked into it, the only thing that stopped me from applying was money. The Atlantis Project seemed to always appear in some way or another for the past semester. A few weeks ago, I found out that someone else I knew got accepted into the program, so I made the decision to apply. I felt as though if the Atlantis Project kept appearing, and it was something that would be a life changing experience that did nothing but better myself for the future, then why should money be the thing that held me back? So, I applied. I had my phone interview that following week and found out that I was accepted shortly after.
Through the Atlantis Project, I will get the opportunity to: shadow international physicians, rotate weekly through various specialties, shadow for 20 hours per week, go on group excursions to experience Greece’s culture, connect with other pre-med students around the world, and grow personally through this international experience. The total cost for the fellowship is $5,000, however I am aiming to raise $6,000 to afford flights. Included in this cost is: housing, some meals, one group excursion a week, daily transport to and from the hospital, and travel health insurance.
