Tribute to Nathan

Today, I learned of the devastating news of my cousin Joy’s 10 month old boy’s passing. Weeks ago, I saw on facebook pictures of her baby boy, Nathan, suffering from hydrocephalus, a disease that causes fluid buildup in the brain, increasing pressure and making the head appear larger. They were asking for prayers as he was about to undergo surgery.
Nathan had communicating hydrocephalus with supracerebellar arachnoid cyst and the surgery would not only involve removing the liquid, but also removing the cyst.
On April 2, he was admitted for surgery. Then today, April 7, one of our cousins informed us that Nathan had died. I don’t know much about what happened during those 5 days that led to Nathan’s death. It’s so sudden and so shocking.
As a mother, I sympathize with her, but I can only imagine – no, I can’t even bring myself to imagine what she’s going through. Getting to motherhood has been such a difficult journey for her, only to lead up to this. I will never be able to lessen the pain and suffering she’s experiencing, but I can at least try to lessen some of her worries during this extremely difficult time.
Soon, they will bury their son, and that comes with so many expenses. Her husband works, but his earnings won’t be able to cover much. They live in the Philippines, where a year’s worth of wages would barely cover a burial plot. Everything is pretty much paid in cash, and they will not only be grieving in the next few weeks, but also be worrying about how to pay for the viewing, the casket, and the burial plot.
They are a young couple who dreamt of a growing family. I don’t know how this will affect their future plans. It’s too soon for them to know. However, I hope that they remain hopeful and positive towards the future however grim today may be.
I'm hoping to raise enough money to cover the burial plot for Nathan which would be about 100,000 pesos or 2,000 US dollars. Mothers should be able to grieve for their kids without financial worries.
