Tre'Von's Medical and Recovery

Tre'Von is a 14 year old teenager with aspirations to one day play major league baseball.  He currently plays baseball in our community as well as AAU baseball.  Recently Tre'Von started complaining that he was having trouble with his vision. Quite honestly, I chalked it up to an excuse for not doing his homework!  After having him seen by the school nurse, referred to his primary care physician, again referred to a pediatric ophthalmologist and then being sent to a cornea specialist, my son was diagnosed with Keratoconis.  Keratoconis is an eye disease that affects the structure of the cornea.  Until recently, the only treatment was a corneal transplant. HIs condition is too advanced for contact lenses.  There is now an experimental treatment called corneal cross-linking that causes the cornea to become hard and stops the condition from getting worse. The cornea can then be reshaped with laser vision correction.  Without this, my son will need a corneal transplant.  This procedure is NOT FDA approved in the United States and I would have to take my son to Canada to have the procedure done.  Of course, the insurance will not pay due to it being considered an experiemental procedure.  I have located trials being done in the United States and while visiting one, it was learned that my son not only has it in his left eye, but is in the beginning stages of his right eye.  Although it is a trial, it is not free.  I'm not sure of the complete costs yet, but was advised it is in the thousands.  If he is not a candidate for the trial, then we have no option other than to pursue treatment in Canada.  We need help to pay the costs associated with the treatment and care, transportation costs etc.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I will continue to update all as we progress through the system!
