Tree Free Paper Pulp from Agro-Waste by Zafree

Zafree, an Ethiopian-based startup that makes 100% tree-free paper pulp from agro-waste, has launched this crowdfunding campaign to raise a total of 200,000€. The funds raised will be used to construct multiple sheds in different locations in Ethiopia to make it more convenient for the farmers to deliver the agro-waste, buy agro-waste in advance to keep in stock, meet the demands of the paper product manufacturers, and have a positive impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions and indirectly saving trees.

Zafree strives towards a higher, more sustainable future, for themselves and the generations to come by changing the face of the paper industry.

Zafree  is a unique company that is planning to disrupt the paper industry. Zafree makes paper pulp that is 100% tree-free by using agro-waste as an input instead of wood. By taking this approach Zafree saves trees from being cut, avoids the burning of crop residue in the fields, and enables paper product manufacturers with a passion for sustainability to be more environmentally responsible. 

Zafree first started its operations at home, with the co-founders, Bethelhem Dejene and Betelhem Fikre producing handmade notebooks and postcards traditionally using a juicer and a pot. And now, Zafree is currently constructing its factory. What a journey!


Zafree has a 100% eco-friendly production line. From start to finish, nothing is wasted. The liquid by-product is fed back into the production line and the solid by-product is distributed to the small farmers for free as it is an organic fertilizer.

Zafree involves many stakeholders in its value chain from buying agro-waste from small farmers to selling its products to paper product manufacturers. By buying agro-waste from small farmers Zafree enables the farmers to gain additional income and by being a supplier, paper product manufacturers can get easy access to local supply.
