Travis Hogue Medical Fund

It pains me to have to create this GoFundMe today, but I need to take action for those I love who are struggling to help themselves.

My dear friend and brother Travis was in a terrible motorcycle accident earlier this week. He has only had his motorcycle for a few weeks and was blindsided by an SUV while riding in San Diego. Travis was wearing a helmet so was fortunate enough to not sustain any head or brain injuries, but is enduring many other very serious and critical injuries to his left arm, knee and leg. Both bones in his left arm were severely fractured and came through the flesh. His left lower leg was also shattered in the accident. He has large holes in his left knee and back from the impact. Travis is currently undergoing his second surgery at UCSD Hillcrest. Both his limbs require plates and screws to stabilize them and they will be completely out of use for approx 10 weeks.

When he is finally able to return home, extensive physical and occupational therapy are going to necessary, as the doctors have already said his arm will never be the same. He will be restricted to a wheelchair for many weeks due to the extent of the damage. As only 1 arm is functioning, he will not be able to push himself, thus requiring assistance full time when awake.

For those who aren't aware, Travis has been living at Veterans Village of San Diego, a community dedicated to veterans who are seeking assistance to grow in every aspect of their lives. I have also had the pleasure of watching Travis grow into an amazing example of service to others and what it looks like when one actively participates in a 12-step program. Between working 2 jobs, helping others through the recovery process, being a great son and boyfriend and a friend among friends,he is truly walking the walk. it is devastating to see this roadblock in front of him. To top it off, he has been discharged from Veteran's Village due to his injuries and their inability to monitor that.

Travis' mother (Tonya) is extremely active in San Diego recovery and helps many. After surviving 2 brain surgeries last year, she is only 3 weeks back to work in the assisted living field. She is going to bring Travis into her rented home in North Park. Unfortunately it is a very small craftsmen home with small door frames and 21 stairs to enter. It will take 4 men to get Travis up the stairs (at least) and the home is too small to get a wheelchair into the bathroom. The home is also temporarily shared with Ashley, Travis' girlfriend who is doing an internship to become a social worker here is SD.

Because of this, I am trying to assist them by becoming a member of Travis' hands on support team. I will be on-site assisting with his daily needs from meal assistance, bathroom assistance and overall pep talks! Unless Travis potentially goes into a Skilled Nursing Facility, we are having great difficulty figuring out how to provide his care. We are looking at moving into a larger home so that we can meet his needs.

Travis has been a barista at Peet's Coffee and does not have health benefits. While Covered California does provide some coverage it is nowhere what will be needed for daily expenses. He has applied for disability but that will be minimal. There are going to be many out of pocket medical bills and expenses, therapies, etc and overall his inability to work will make life more than challenging. His motorcycle was totaled. While his mother will cover what she can, again, after 2 brain surgeries, she is just 3 weeks back to work after 18 months. Travis is going to need a few add'l hours a day of probable hands on care.

I know there are many tragedies happening in the world right now, some afar and some right here in our own backyard. Many members of our San Diego recovery community have helped already and we are so grateful for you and all of your assistance. If you can give it is GREATLY appreciated, if you cannot, please share this and keep us in your thoughts and prayers. We all know that Travis is going to pull through this stronger and better than ever. Our job now is to make this as stress free and obtainable as possible. Thank you all.
