Trauma Training to Help My Students

A warm welcome to all who visit my page.

I am Julia Joy "The Healstorian" - a human, healer, historian, hopeful educator who believes our healing is in our stories.

I need your financial support to become certified in Social Emotional Learning, Mindfulness, and Movement. I have partnered with "Breathe for Change" the only research-based program which trains educators in trauma-informed, research-based CASEL-aligned methods.

My Students
I serve young people at Freire Charter School of Wilmington. It is the only college-preparatory high school in the city limits of Wilmington.

Currently, I teach secondary History and Social Studies, with an emphasis in literacy and emotional intelligence.
 

Our school serves 479 students throughout the Wilmington, Delaware area. Student demographics are diverse: 70.98% Black/African American, 13.36% Hispanic/Latino, 4.18% Multiracial, and 9.60% White/Caucasian.

Of our student population, 43.42% are Low Income, and 15.45% are identified as students with disabilities.

My Project
I hope to gain funding to complete the Breathe For Change Mind-Body Wellness and Social-Emotional Certification. I believe this will assist me in better serving our students so they can feel safe during these times, gain self-awareness, and increase their self-confidence in emotional intelligence and empathy, which is proved to increase student engagement, literacy, and willingness to take risks.

In the words of Justina Schlund, “The integration of SEL and literacy also has the potential to nurture more inclusive and equitable classrooms, schools, and communities” (Schlund, 2019).
 

It is my intention for my teaching practice to stand in the intersection of literacy, equity, and social-emotional learning. I hope to increase student literacy skills and empathy by combining mindfulness, breathing, movement, courageous conversations, and memoir writing as tools for healing and reconciliation.
