There are moments that mark your life. There are moments when you realize nothing will ever be the same and time is divided into two parts, before this and after this. This moment for my sister, Showaba Ameeri, was in September 2016.
Showaba’s was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, which is an inflammation of both sides of one section of the spinal cord. This neurological disorder often damages the insulating material covering nerve cell fibers. This diagnosis has left her world completely shook and rattled Showaba and her family’s lives. She is one of the toughest and most patient people I know, and she will overcome this inshAllah.
Showaba was in the hospital and a rehabilitation facility for several months before being allowed to return home to continue her healing journey. Initially, neurologists stated that Showaba would never be able to walk again. With sabr, patience and a lot of prayers she was able to make progress through physical therapy. She was determined to prove them wrong and fight for her right to walk again. There was a time where she couldn’t stand on her own two feet, but she preserved and did it. Showaba lost sensation in her hands and fingers, but she continued to hold on and fight. She learned to use a walker to try to get in one step at a time. The beginning of her journey was difficult for Showaba and her family to fully process how their lives were changing. With her diagnosis came a bout of depression, but she knew she wasn’t going to let that define her journey. There are days where her nerve pain becomes unbearable for her to tolerate - physically and emotionally draining… Showaba’s willpower and strength lies in the eyes of her children, and she’s determined to overcome this for herself and for her family.
Alhamdulilah for Showaba’s determination and resilience. It’s allowed her to come thus far and prove doctors wrong, one appointment at a time. She was making significant progress until the new healthcare reforms were rolled out. This brought her recovery to a brunt stop. Showaba’s insurance was revoked, which put a temporary halt on her physical therapy and further doctors visits. We have tried to incorporate physical therapy at least once a week, alongside some medication in the meantime. Unfortunately, you can’t “give and take” with this recovery journey. Showaba needs our support, now more than ever.
This is our plea to you all, our beloved community of friends and family. We are looking to raise enough funds to help Showaba get back on her two feet and encourage her to see the light at the end of the tunnel, even if it’s just a glimmer. With the funds, we would be able to have a plasma exchange set up for her alongside consistent physical therapy. The longer we wait, the more she will slow down. Her muscles are losing their memory and time is of the essence. We are blessed to have you all, and inshAllah with your support we will make our vision come to life.
