Trans Kid’s Family Searching For Sanctuary

Trans Youth Activist Kai Shappley’s Family Searching For Sanctuary

GoFundMe says the most effective way to raise money is to express a clear goal and how I plan to accomplish it.

 •What is our goal?
The goal is to get Kai & Kaleb out of Texas and into a safe state.
•How will we accomplish this goal?
No idea how but we are going to do it anyway with your help.
•What do I plan to do with the money?
Gas! Maybe air BnB’s. Maybe KOA campgrounds. Maybe an apartment. Maybe a down payment on a motor home.

The thing is, we will have way more options if we have resources.

We are only taking the belongings that fit in the car (unless we get a motor home) including three cats and a 50lb dog on a road trip that doesn’t have a destination yet.

What we have in mind so far is an epic road trip the kids will remember forever and my goal as a mom is to help ensure the memories from this season of our life are the ones that bring them joy later in life.

I’ve been trying to figure out what to say about the situation we find ourselves in but realize I can’t say it any better than Devan wrote for Vogue Magazine when she shared our family’s story.

“Kai Shappley, and all transgender children in Texas, now have more to fear than the boogeyman. In February 2022, Texas governor Greg Abbott issued a letter to the Department of Family and Protective Services directing the state agency to investigate medical treatments for transgender adolescents—such as puberty blockers and hormones—as child abuse. The letter asserts that there are reporting requirements for “all licensed professionals who have direct contact with children who may be subject to such abuse, including doctors, nurses, and teachers,” and that a failure to report merits criminal penalties.”
“… Governor Abbot’s directive has been argued over in Texas courts. In March, a state’s appeals court, prompted by a lawsuit brought by the ACLU and Lambda Legal, upheld an injunction blocking investigations into parents. In May, Texas’s state Supreme Court partially overturned that injunction. By June, a Texas judge had blocked investigations again, with more hearings on Abbot’s directive to come. What happens if transgender children do get taken away from their families? Foster care and an uncertain future. (At least 104 children have died in Texas’s long-term care system since September 2019, six as a result of documented abuse by caregivers.)” -This Girl’s Life: On Growing Up Trans in Texas BY DEVAN DIAZ June 30, 2022 https://www.vogue.com/article/kai-shappley-trans-youth-activist-texas

It's not just trans kids Texas is harming by scapegoating them for political purposes. My youngest son, 9 years old Kaleb, who is cisgender regularly expresses fear that he would be taken from me by state agents and fear for the irreperable damage he knows would be caused to his sister were she forced to de-transition. When states target trans kids, their parents, and their doctors, there is collateral damage - so I'm looking for a new State where my daughter will be allowed to be a kid, and my youngest son will no longer have to worry about being taken from me or his sister.

If you are not able to help monetarily, please consider helping by sharing our fundraiser with the people in your social circle and know that we appreciate you for doing that.
