I would like to personally ask our family, friends, colleagues and communities to join us in supporting my cousin Tracy (Rohn) Mallek in her fight to beat cancer and to lift her & her entire family up in prayers.
Tracy has truly been an inspiration to me for so many reasons. Not only is Tracy & her husband Greg raising two wonderful, kind, compassionate kids Jaedyn and Kahl, but she is a beautiful person inside & out. Her determination, strength & positive attitude are awe-inspiring. I’m amazed by her positive outlook even during the most challenging times. I believe it is her strong faith, great sense of humor and ability to look for the silver lining in all situations that has helped her thus far. Tracy & Greg are prideful & private people, so I wasn’t sure they would agree to us creating the GoFundMe account, but I’m grateful they agreed to allow all of us this opportunity to show how much we care about their family.
I’d like to share her arduous journey the last four years. In Sep 2014 Tracy had a grand mal seizure caused by a brain tumor and underwent brain surgery. With the possibility of Tracy having another seizure it was decided for her to change employers from working home care, which meant driving a lot, as a physical therapist to working in a clinic, to cut down on the driving. Fortunately, she was able to gain employment at St. Mary’s of Michigan Spine and Rehabilitation, which she previously worked at and was able to return to work the beginning of 2015.
In May of that year Tracy’s husband Greg fractured his back while helping a neighbor’s father get into the house after a chemotherapy treatment. As he was attempting to pull the wheelchair up two steps onto the porch and into the house, Greg’s back gave out and when he fell to the concrete he broke his back which required surgery in early June 2015. In June of 2016 Greg would require another back surgery, but this time it would be much more extensive. Prior to his back surgery in 2016 he would require an emergency Appendectomy. For his back surgery he would require four Laminectomy’s to be done, while having L2, L3, L4, L5, and S1 all fused due to debilitating pain that would shoot down his legs keeping him from being able to walk properly without extreme pain.
Because they had met their annual deductible in 2016 they decided to get Tracy’s follow-up MRI for her brain cancer. The results of the MRI showed that Tracy’s brain cancer had returned.
Jan 2017 Tracy had her 2nd brain surgery. Following the surgery Tracy underwent radiation treatments which consisted of five days a week for seven weeks & then started a regime of chemotherapy which she took a pill form for five consecutive nights. The regimen of chemo would be one week of chemo then three weeks off followed by another week of chemo and three weeks off for a total of six cycles. Due to the chemo being very physically taxing on Tracy it put her in the hospital for several days in June. Her first two rounds of chemo went as scheduled but the last four were all delayed a week due to her platelet and white blood cell counts being critically low which resulted in her having multiple blood transfusions.
Oct 2, 2017 Tracy returned to work on a part time basis to slowly become re-acclimated with work.
Oct 6th Tracy had a seizure at home minutes before driving to her niece’s birthday party putting her back in the hospital for three days. With this, it was decided by her neurosurgeon and her oncologist that she would need to go on permanent disability. With her being unable to work her family no longer has her income which has resulted in accumulation of expenses which have been taxing.
This year Tracy’s faith & endurance were tested yet again when she had her annual mammogram in April. That same day she was contacted by the clinic informing her that an ultrasound needed to be performed due to the mammogram detecting a lump/growth.
April 11 Tracy originally had appointment scheduled as a follow up to her brain cancer. They met with the oncologist with him telling her that she now has breast cancer and scheduled a biopsy of the tumor.
April 17 the biopsy was performed on the tumor in her right breast, three days later she received confirmation that she had Stage 2 cancer.
April 24th four days after finding out she had breast cancer, her brother, Tom died unexpectedly from a stroke he was only 55yrs old. Later that same afternoon Tracy had an MRI of the tumor confirming the biopsy results of the cancer, and in May Tracy began her first cycle of chemotherapy. She would have chemo every two weeks for four treatments.
Tracy began her second cycle of chemotherapy this month (July 2018) and will have chemo every week for twelve consecutive weeks. This will conclude, if there are no complications, at the end of Sep 2018. With these treatments she will also begin her hormone therapy that will last a year.
In Oct 2018 Tracy will have surgery, but the extent is yet to be determined. Depending on the surgery Tracy could be recovering for up to a year.
I have prayed for Gods guidance in the best way to support Tracy during this difficult time & the answer came through this GoFundMe account, which would help lift the burden of their medical expenses etc. I would like to humbly ask each of you to join me in assisting Tracy & her family while she continues with her chemo treatments and prepares for surgery this fall.
I sincerely appreciate you opening your hearts and offering your prayers, donations & all the support you have shown the entire Mallek family, God bless you!
My deepest heartfelt thanks to each of you!
