My name is Rana Ahmed Elkhateeb an Environmental Engineer, Passionate Scientist, Talented Painter and Creative Writer. I graduated from the University of Science and Technology at Zewail City (ZC) established by Dr. Ahmed Zewail -The Egyptian Nobel laureate in Chemistry- in 2022.
- Since a very young age, I have been passionate about science and mathematics. In school, I used to actively participate in competitions for excellent students and attended camps, seminars, and scientific conferences. Enrolling in Zewail City has been a dream for me since middle school. My dad was thrilled by the idea and accompanied me in the trip. He was my source of inspiration, encouragement, and reassurance along this trip. I got admitted at ZC with a scholarship for academic excellence to be amongst the 2.5% of students who got accepted. I was always focusing on maintaining my academic performance not only to excel in my field but also to make my parents proud and pay their hard work off. Long story short, my dad got really sick and unfortunately passed away which noticeably affected me and my family on many levels. I struggled with depression and PTSD. However, with the help of my mother, I persisted, actively sought effective treatment, and successfully restored my balance. I was able to excel in my last year in college while working a full-time job to support myself and my family financially after my dad’s death. I graduated with a GPA that allowed me to work in one of the innovative recycling firms in Egypt.
- My Bachelor’s Graduation Thesis “Photovoltaic (PV) Waste Management Framework and Recycling Facility Design in Egypt” qualified for the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects finals among 162 qualified projects out of 6300 projects and was chosen as an ambassador project for Aswan Governorate as the best sustainable environmental project. During my undergraduate years, I participated in 2 internships, one of them was in BioMasr Ltd. for biomass and waste management and the other was in Plastic Pipes and Products Co. and I was recognized for my hard work. I also attended The training organized by The UNIDO on Business Development and Growth Management for Solar Thermal Markets. Moreover, I worked as a Junior Teaching assistant at Zewail City. I actively participated in many research and design projects tackling different engineering and environmental aspects.
- Last month, I got admitted to the University of Padova Italy to continue my studies in Environmental Engineering for the academic year 2024-2025. Unfortunately, after my dad's passing, our family's financial situation has become tight. With my two sisters still studying for their bachelor's degrees, both my mother and I are working to cover their education expenses and support our family's living costs amidst Egypt's challenging economic conditions. For the aforementioned reasons, I don't have enough funds to support myself to study abroad and I am not able to proceed with the upcoming steps of enrollment in Padova University. This opportunity is a turning point in my life as an Egyptian woman in the engineering field since multidisciplinary programs like this are not available in Egypt, and opportunities for women are limited. This program will provide me with a top-notch education in one of the best universities in Europe which I really dreamt about joining. I aspire to show that a woman from a third-world country has the potential to make significant and impactful contributions that can resonate globally. The program’s multidisciplinary nature will provide me with advanced knowledge in chemical, physical and hydrological interactions as well as waste management, water treatment, site remediation, environmental protection and legislation. I am eager to pursue a career as a Research and Development Engineer (R&D) in the field of waste management, resource recovery, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
- Acquiring knowledge in environmental and social management is crucial for Egypt and many other countries with current pressing environmental challenges and socioeconomic inequalities. This Master's program will empower me to actively engage in and make significant contributions towards sustainable development by tackling challenges as water scarcity, agriculture and food security, pollution and climate change not only in Egypt and Italy but also on a broader global scale.
- I am committed to giving my utmost effort to overcome any obstacles that may arise in my way. This fund will assist me during my first semester and with the enrollment process at the university until I secure a part-time job to sustain myself. I am confident that my journey will inspire youth in developing countries, encouraging them to strive for their aspirations, attain better education, and contribute to uplifting their communities.

انا رنا أحمد الخطيب، مهندسة بيئية، وعالمة شغوفة، ورسامة موهوبة، وكاتبة مبدعة. تخرجت من جامعة العلوم والتكنولوجيا بمدينة زويل التي أنشأها الدكتور أحمد زويل - الحائز على جائزة نوبل في الكيمياء - في عام 2022.
منذ صغري كنت شغوفه بالعلوم والرياضيات. في المدرسة، كنت أشارك في مسابقات الطلاب المتفوقين وأحضر المعسكرات والندوات والمؤتمرات العلمية. لقد كان الالتحاق بمدينة زويل بمثابة حلم بالنسبة لي منذ المدرسة الإعدادية. أعجب والدي بالفكرة ورافقني في الرحلة و كان مصدر إلهامي وتشجيعي وطمأنينتي طوال هذه الرحلة. وقد تم قبولي للدراسه في جامعة زويل بمنحة للتميز الأكاديمي لأكون من بين 2.5% من الطلاب الذين تم قبولهم. كنت أركز دائمًا على الحفاظ على أدائي الأكاديمي ليس فقط للتفوق في مجال تخصصي ولكن أيضًا لجعل والدي فخورين ومكافأة عملهم الشاق. باختصار، مرض والدي بشدة وتوفي للأسف مما أثر بشكل ملحوظ عليّ وعلى عائلتي على العديد من المستويات. لقد كافحت مع الاكتئاب واضطراب ما بعد الصدمة. ومع ذلك، وبمساعدة والدتي، أصررت، وطلبت العلاج الفعال، ونجحت في استعادة توازني. لقد تمكنت من التفوق في سنتي الأخيرة في الكلية أثناء العمل في وظيفة بدوام كامل لدعم نفسي وعائلتي ماليًا بعد وفاة والدي. و تخرجت بمعدل تراكمي سمح لي بالعمل في واحده من اكبر شركات إعادة التدوير في مصر.

تم قبولي الشهر الماضي في جامعة بادوفا الإيطالية لمواصلة دراستي في الهندسة البيئية للعام الدراسي 2024-2025. لسوء الحظ، بعد وفاة والدي، أصبح الوضع المالي لعائلتنا صعبًا. مع استمرار شقيقتي في الدراسة للحصول على درجة البكالوريوس، نعمل أنا وأمي لتغطية نفقات تعليمهما ودعم تكاليف معيشة عائلتنا وسط الظروف الاقتصادية الصعبة التي تمر بها مصر. للأسباب المذكورة أعلاه، ليس لدي ما يكفي من الأموال لدعم نفسي للدراسة في الخارج ولا أستطيع المضي قدمًا في الخطوات القادمة للتسجيل في جامعة بادوفا. هذه الفرصة نقطة تحول في حياتي كامرأة مصرية في المجال الهندسي، حيث أن مثل هذه البرامج متعددة التخصصات غير متوفرة في مصر، والفرص المتاحة للنساء محدودة الي حد ما. سيوفر لي هذا البرنامج تعليمًا رفيع المستوى في واحدة من أفضل الجامعات في أوروبا والتي حلمت حقًا بالانضمام إليها. أطمح إلى إظهار أن المرأة من دولة من دول العالم الثالث لديها القدرة على تقديم مساهمات كبيرة ومؤثرة يمكن أن يتردد صداها عالميًا. ستوفر لي الطبيعة المتعددة التخصصات للبرنامج معرفة متقدمة في التفاعلات الكيميائية والفيزيائية والهيدرولوجية بالإضافة إلى إدارة النفايات ومعالجة المياه ومعالجة المواقع وحماية البيئة والتشريعات. أطمح ان اعمل كمهندسة بحث وتطوير في مجال إدارة النفايات، واستعادة الموارد، وحماية البيئة، والتنمية المستدامة.
اكتساب المعرفة في مجال الإدارة البيئية والاجتماعية أمرًا بالغ الأهمية بالنسبة لمصر والعديد من البلدان الأخرى التي تواجه التحديات البيئية الملحة وعدم المساواة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية. سيمكنني برنامج الماجستير هذا من المشاركة بنشاط وتقديم مساهمات كبيرة نحو التنمية المستدامة من خلال معالجة التحديات مثل ندرة المياه والزراعة والأمن الغذائي والتلوث وتغير المناخ ليس فقط في مصر وإيطاليا ولكن أيضًا على نطاق عالمي أوسع.
سيساعدني هذا الدعم خلال الفصل الدراسي الأول وفي عملية التسجيل في الجامعة الي ان أحصل على وظيفة بدوام جزئي لإعالة نفسي. أنا واثقة من أن رحلتي ستلهم الشباب في البلدان النامية، وتشجعهم على السعي لتحقيق تطلعاتهم، والحصول على تعليم أفضل، والمساهمة في الارتقاء بمجتمعاتهم.
