With profound sadness we say goodbye to our dear friend and gentle spirit Tony Hunt Jr. who left us on October 12th.
We at Alcheringa Gallery enjoyed a very close friendship and special working relationship with Tony for more than thirty years. In his honour we would like to establish a trust fund for his 10 year old son, Robert, who adored his father. This trust fund will become available to only Robert, once he comes of age. Perhaps it will allow him the opportunity to follow in his father's footsteps to carry on the family tradition.
Tony's imagination was populated by the many spirits of his Kwakwaka'wakw ancestry. These could be seen to greatest advantage within the plethora of masks that appeared from his hand as if by magic. As an initiated Hamatsa dancer Tony had inherited the rights to wear these masks in the participation of many high ranking dances belonging to his family.
Demonstrating outstanding talent from childhood Tony Hunt Jr was an accomplished carver in 1978 at the age of 18 when he participated in his first solo exhibition in Vancouver. A further solo showing at Alcheringa Gallery in 1994 as part of the celebration around the Commonwealth Games held that year in Victoria, consolidated Tony's position as a major exponent of his Kwakwaka'wakw culture. A Master artist in every sense of the word, his work is held in the collections of many major museums.
Tony Hunt Jr was the eldest son of renowned totem carver, hereditary Chief Tony Hunt. He had recently picked up that mantle and two of his totem poles grace elementary schools in Victoria.
A portion of the proceeds from sales in Alcheringa Gallery will be donated to the fund throughout the coming months.
