The Russell Family

On August 20 our next door neighbor, Tom Russell,  who had decided to get in shape by riding his bike to work was hit by car. At first, it seemed Tom was very lucky. He sustained many broken bones and a punctured lung but his helmet worked well and his injuries would heal. He told the story about getting hit and joked “So much for getting in shape!”

As the weeks in the hospital have gone on Tom has had complications related to his injuries. He had to have surgery to put in two lung braces that will allow the lungs to expand and begin to heal. The surgery was long and tough. After the surgery Tom developed a lung infection, pneumonia and some blood clots. 

What first seemed like waiting for broken bones to heal has become more serious and will require more time in the hospital. Tom’s road to recovery will be a long one.

Tom’s family, his wife Terese & three kids, Sean, Ryan and Delaney, have been working hard to take care of themselves and everything at home while making daily trips to the hospital.  The Russell family has been very involved in the community, spending many years helping with fundraisers at Washington Elementary, Tom coached baseball for all three of his kids year after and year, served on the BYBA board (wearing many hats!) for more than 10 years, and the whole family has been involved in many other local activities. Everyone knows the Russells!! Many people have been asking what they can do to help this wonderful family through this tough time.

We know there are many medical expenses coming their way and we are not sure when Tom will be well enough to return to work. We would love to be able to help them find some relief and be able to focus on healing.
