You may not know the two boys in the photo - they're a part of my family. They're my godchildren who I met ten years ago when their mom, dad and I went through an epic battle together in the Portland court system. The kids' dad died soon after. Their mom is like a sister to me and I love her and her kids with everything I've got.
When their mom called me last night, she could barely utter the words - her dad, the boys' grandfather, had died on Monday in his car. She has no money for any funeral costs. And, she has no help.
Right now her dad is in a refrigerator at the morgue.
She hadn't shared that he died with me because she didn't want to feel like a burden. You're not a burden, I said. No one is. We're all in this together. We're here to lift each other up.
How much is it? It'll cost $2,500 to give the kids' grandfather a proper burial, memorial and feed the family for a week after.
