UPDATE - We are speechless at the outpouring of support for this guy. We never imagined raising this much money. Sadly we never expected NEEDING this much money either. His bills are currently at $2000. That is to get him through the next 24 hours to slowly start to introduce calories into his system to avoid sudden death from re-feeding syndrome. We may need to keep him in the hospital for 2-3 more days beyond that. We just don't know yet. The full details and updates on his story are here, under this facebook photo album link. Toby is SOMEHOW alive today despite months of starvation and neglect. His owner was sent to jail over 2 months ago. We don't know the full details, but we know he's been tied up alone outside all summer in the back of an apartment complex. NO ONE reported him. Until today. When he was rescued by North Chicago Animal Control, they found him with a bowl of green slimy water, no food, and he was barely able to walk on his own. He was apparently eating pears that fell from a nearby tree, and every once in awhile someone threw him some food, and he has diarrhea. It doesn't take much to see however that he has been starving and suffering for a VERY long time. Seeing him in person is even more heartbreaking than these pictures. He is a truly defeated dog. All he could do was lay on the blanket. He could barely hold his head up without shaking, and he was too weak to eat. His paws were so cold, it was frightening. He is currently at the vet being evaluated and given fluids. They feel he needs to stay the night due to how weak he is. They are also running bloodwork to assess whether his kidneys and liver are shutting down due to malnutrition/eating only pears. Of course we want to check for parasites given the filthy water he was drinking, and test for deadly infectious diseases like parvo and heartworm. We also hope to do x-rays to see if there is anything more serious like an intestinal blockage or other things like rocks in his GI tract. Dogs sometimes eat whatever they can in the presence of extreme starvation. Toby is now the property of North Chicago Animal Control, so there is NO money to provide anything other than euthanasia, and we simply cannot bring ourselvels to end his life without giving him a chance to survive the horror he has been through. So we are again reaching out to our community to help us where others have failed him. We are praying that starvation is his "only" problem, but we can't determine his chances for survival without your help! Please share his story and PLEASE help if you can. Thank you.
