Children growing in Kenya experience a lot of challenges such as having no access to education, early pregnancies, arranged marriages, lack of cleaning drinking water, drug addiction and much more. These challenges are hard for Nero typical children so imagine how hard a life is for a child with autism or learning disabilities. All of the above challenges affect them and also the stigma of Kenyans not embracing the child’s differences instead they are ashamed and lock the children away.
It has been a long hard year but with support we have finally found a school suitable for wheelchairs and running water.
The Yellow Rose objective is to fill the gap for as many children as possible. The school will teach the most important skills for professional development, social and economic self-realisation supporting the child to have a brighter future.
The school will create supportive networks for the children such as –
· Acting like a protective factor against peer pressure which may sway them into destructive behaviour such as taking drugs.
· Promote resilience amongst the children
· Accessibility for wheelchair users
· Specialised teachers who are skilled in understanding and teaching autistic and disabled children
· Increased parent involvement
· Increase children’s safety because of supervised activities
· Role model teachers will show children social and educational skills
· Extend learning opportunities, such as learning to swim
The school has now access to electricity enable the older children to use computers and learn IT skills, which will also encourage children to have the need to attend school.
The next step is to install internet so classes can consist or research and information found all over the world broaden the children’s knowledge.
Running water is also a benefit we have now at the school. Having running water will increase the hygiene and health of the children, preventing chronic and acute diseases.
