To speak at anthropology conference
Donation protected
I have been accepted to present a paper at the Annual American Anthropological Association Conference in San Jose, California which will be held 14 -18 November, 2018, where I will provide an auto-ethnographic account of emotional abuse in academia and explain why I am not surprised academia has been largely silent in response to the #MeToo Movement.
Airline travel, hotel accommodations, food and childcare will be approximately $3000.00 I have already paid $300.00 in order to re-new my subscription to AAA and register for the conference. Now that my abstract has been officially accepted by the Association for Feminist Anthropology and placed on a panel of feminist activists, I am inspired to share my stories and views on how and why harassment is so common-place and academia has been largely silent.
I am the sole provider to my two daughters and have not had the opportunity to directly use my PhD in International Development Studies and Cultural Anthropology. I work as a part-time Admin Assistant and am very encouraged to attend this conference and speak about my experiences in academia, as well as an Admin Assistant at a university where I observe and have experienced, chronically, emotional abuse. I have also raised my concerns and voice and things have improved for myself and colleagues. I believe that this opportunity to travel and speak at the conference will be healing and empowering, and encourage others to speak out and make needed changes in hierarchical organizations.
Please feel free to share this GoFundMe site to audiences which you think will be supportive.
Thanks very much,
Valerie Foster Githinji, PhD
