Support for Lee

Donation protected
On Sunday August 20th, My brother Lee was victim of a violent unprovoked assault and was hospitalized. He has sustained serious injuries that will require surgery, a period of recovery, and time off work. His assailant is a convicted felon and has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

I have been able to visit Lee for a week to assist with his immediate care. I have started the necessary paperwork to ensure he receives financial support for his injuries and long term recovery.  Due to systemic delays we do not yet know what that will entail as we have not yet been put in touch with the medical specialists he requires to provide the next diagnostics.

Lee's case involves many levels of bureaucracy so the claims and social assistance processes will be complex.  It may be some time before he can access the resources he requires to facilitate his journey towards healing. Unfortunately, I can only remain here a week and will be managing these issues from a distance.

In the interim, Lee needs assistance to ensure his basic daily expenses are met so he can remain stable and in his home during this process. This includes groceries, transportation to appointments, rent, utilities, phone expenses, uncovered prescriptions, and whatever in home care needs may arise post surgery.

My big brother has always been there for me.  He held my hand through the first confusing and scary years of my life before I could take care of myself. My first time seeing a horse, taking a bus, standing up for myself, visiting a big city, going on a date, and all the other ups and downs of teenage and adult life.

Lee has always encouraged me to be braver and smarter, and to strive for authenticity and justice. When I was bullied in Kindergarten as soon as he found out he gave the kid such a talking to, no kid in that school ever bullied me again. When times were tough at home, he always took the fall for me. He would stop at nothing to take the blame and punishment so I would be spared. In my darkest and loneliest times, he always made sure the perfect mix tape, VHS of taped cartoons, or book was in the mail.  As a teen and during university summers, living rent free with Lee in Edmonton and Montreal for months on end were the best. They opened my eyes and filled me with hope about how life could be.

I can never repay what he's done for me. I wouldn't be who I am today. For one, I would have terrible taste in music and would never have been so passionate about literature. That alone is reason enough to do what we can to help him out during this difficult time.

If you are able, please consider contributing to this cause or sharing this campaign so we can help Lee get back on his feet.  If you're broke but can help in other ways (for example, would like to send Lee a care package of mixed tapes/get well cards/used books/homemade baked goods/lead a Karma yoga class, etc) PM me, or leave a comment! I'll help get that goodness to him somehow.

With Love,
Amanda
