Lucy's Medical Fund

Our good friend Lucy Lisowska is one of a handful of Jews living in my ancestral city of Bialystok. My dear mother of blessed memory was born in Bialystok in 1910 and lived her first 13 years on ulica Polna 27. World War II and the Soviet post-war system destroyed much of what my mother experienced in a city where about 60% of the population was Jewish.

Lucy has been singularly responsible for keeping the Jewish heritage of Bialystok in the minds and hearts of the City. Lucy is the representative of the Jewish Communities of Poland in Bialystok and nearby towns in the region. During the 15 years I have known her, Lucy has coordinated the annual Commemoration of the Bialystok Ghetto Uprising on August 16 in cooperation with the Bialystok Mayor’s office, the Bialystok Landsmanschaft in Israel, and survivors in the United States, Israel, and other countries. She developed and runs the annual Zachor Jewish Culture Festival in Bialystok each June since 2009. She persuaded the City to fence in and provide security to Bialystok’s Bagnowka Jewish Cemetery and works with various organizations and school groups to maintain and restore the Cemetery. Lucy has been and continues to be involved in every Jewish issue, positive or negative, in Bialystok and nearby towns.

With passion and unsurpassed dedication, Lucy has made it her mission to preserve the history of the Jews of Bialystok. She represents all Jews with connections to Bialystok and nearby towns. This is her life's work!

Until now, I did not know how to compensate Lucy for what she does for me … and all of us. She represents my interests and yours in the Bialystok region and her only compensation is the love of Jewish Bialystok and the heartfelt “thank you” from folks like us.

Lucy has been making a difference all her life and now it is our turn to do a Mitzvah for her. Lucy needs our help! Lucy’s health has been very fragile over the last few years. In 2018, Lucy was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in her stomach. She had an operation to remove the tumor and endured a long recovery. In 2019, Lucy was diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), which necessitates changes in her lifestyle. Then just five months ago, Lucy had surgery to repair an aneurysm on her brain. She was recovering slowly when about three weeks ago she was again admitted to the hospital. Apparently Lucy has a benign tumor pressing on her brain. As of today, we do not know the prognosis.

Lucy was recently released from the hospital, but her condition is still very poor. She has very severe headaches, she is very weak, and she has difficulty walking. She cannot live alone and is now staying with friends in Bialystok.

Lucy is far from wealthy. She needs support for private doctors and diagnostic tests along with living expenses while she fights her brain condition.

We now need to make a difference for Lucy as she has for so many others.

The photo of Lucy and I was taken in August 2018 in Warsaw, Poland during better times.

Please give what you can. I will provide updates on Lucy’s health through this GoFundMe page.
