Tim Takaro: Protect the Planet -- stopTMX

Tim Takaro, a physician and SFU professor, has been engaged in climate change activism for 30 years - researching, lecturing, publishing, speaking to government leaders and elected officials, and joining protests to raise awareness of the urgent need to slow climate change. In response to the World Health Organization "Code Red for Humanity" declaration and the urging by the United Nations Panel on Climate Change to stop building fossil fuel infrastructure, in 2020, he became part of Protect the Planet - Stop TMX, joining with Indigenous partners and other allies to stop work on the TMX (Trans Mountain pipeline expansion). Tim led a tree-sit in the pathway of the project and he and his colleagues engaged in a peaceful protest for 18 months, slowing its construction. On November 29, 2021, when the RCMP entered the work site to remove the protesters, Tim refused to leave the tree-sit and was arrested. Tim joins over 240 nonviolent land defenders who have been arrested attempting to stop the pipeline expansion, and five of his fellow protesters are currently serving time in jail for their role in the protests.
