Tia Johnson

Goal: Raise $5,000,000 for Tia’s rehabilitation, medical bills, and proper medical care to get her life back on track.

She had just graduated college with a degree in social work. She defied the odds of our country’s racial and gender inequality, but it only took one day to change her life. All she wanted to do was help people.

Tia Johnson was young, smart, and black. She was raised by her single mother who worked multiple jobs to give her the best chance at life she could. Tia made her mom proud by earning her bachelors degree and getting a job that helped special needs children.

However, in April 2017, 25 year-old Tia’s life changed forever. A behavioral aid at Oak Grove School in Murrieta, CA. Tia was working with a female patient when she struck Tia in the head and knocked her unconscious. Tia went for a checkup at the hospital that day, but her insurance wouldn’t approve an MRI for many weeks. 3 weeks later, she knew something wasn’t right. She was nauseous, light-headed, and losing the ability to walk. She and her mother were terrified. When she arrived at the hospital, she couldn’t move her legs.

Shortly after being admitted, Tia’s health declined rapidly. She was paralyzed from the neck down and could only breathe through a ventilator.

Over the following year Tia fought for her life.

Tia’s mother, Carolyn, was terrified of losing her baby girl. The doctors couldn’t figure out why Tia was declining so quickly. Carolyn had to quit her full-time job and spent the next year of her life sleeping in a hospital chair watching Tia slowly fade away. Still, no answers could be found.

It took doctors almost 6 months to diagnosis where the injury took place. Over that time, Tia was put through multiple aggressive treatments, tests, and consultations to figure out why she lost her mobility and ability to breathe on her own.

A successful MRI showed the hit to Tia’s head injured her AV fistula of the medulla, which regulates the autonomic nervous system including respiration. If the doctors could repair the damage immediately, Tia might be able to breathe on her own again. She was rushed to emergency surgery. Miraculously, Tia’s procedure was successful. The doctors were astounded she had survived this long with such an extensive injury.

Only 3 other people in the world have survived this rare type of injury.

Tia was on a ventilator for 6 more weeks before leaving the ICU. Things seemed to be looking up for Tia and Carolyn.

While recovering with weak lungs and high infection rate, her heart stopped beating and paramedics had to shock her multiple times before her heart started beating again. All the while, her mother had to helplessly watch and pray for a miracle. She went back into the ICU until she could breathe on her own again.

Tia finally went home after 485 days in the hospital.

Today, 3 and a half years after her initial injury in 2017, Tia can barely move her fingers and requires extensive physical therapy to relearn how to walk or perform basic functions.

She is a medical miracle, and she needs your help.

All systems have failed her. Behavioral center was negligent, she almost died in the hospital waiting for the doctors to find the source of her injury. Workman’s compensation delayed accepting necessary medical trials and tests. (W.C would not approve moving her to a more advanced hospital where she would receive better care. Wouldn’t approve MRI’s timely which worsened her condition). Lawyers are dragging their feet to push for justice.

Her mother takes care of Tia 24/7. She never leaves her daughters side. Both of their lives have completely changed. All they wish to do is start their lives again, but the COVID-19 pandemic has made this fresh start impossible. Because of this, Tia and Carolyn have been surviving on financial support from friends.

The amount of pain and suffering Tia and her mother endured is immeasurable.

COVID has made it near impossible for Tia to receive proper medical rehabilitation. She needs round the clock care and extensive daily PT to regain any movement in her body. She still cannot walk, eat on her own, or do anything she was able to do since May 2017.

We need your help. Tia needs your help.

She is a young. She is talented. She’s a survivor.
