This is #parkinsons - This is us

Ivan is my baby brother, who 10 years ago was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease.

He is an amazing father to two beautiful children Effy & Ellis and partner to Eleanor – together they are strong but life is hard at times.

He is and will always be my hero for the strength he has shown over the last 10 years.

You’re probably picturing an older person with a tremor but #parkinsons does not discriminate by age. It is more commonly diagnosed in those over 60 but, in rare cases, has also been diagnosed in children.

You will say “but he looks fine”? Yes, he looks fine, but you will rarely meet him when he is off. This last year in particular has been challenging but we go on because if we don’t, then what? Give up, let #YOPD win? It will not win. It will not break us even though it tries. The bad days can be awful but then, just as the towel is about to be thrown in ,there is a good moment, a great day, a whole lot of love and two amazing children who drive him to fight for a better future again.

Ms Catherine Moran, is Ireland’s first female consultant neurosurgeon, in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. Her sub-specialisation in functional neurosurgery means that she will become the first Ireland-based neurosurgeon to carry out Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).

In April of this year Ivan got the call he wanted .. He had been successful in his pre assessment to go forward for DBS.

This involves implanting electrodes in the deep nucleus of the brain which send a current to disturb the abnormal motor circuits so that the patient’s normal movement is restored.

Deep brain stimulation surgeries are due to begin in 2021 with a team from the neurology department at the Mater hospital; the Neurosurgery Centre at Beaumont is already putting plans in place. “

The procedure, which will be suitable for about 50-60 patients with Parkinson’s disease each year, will be welcomed for patients who previously would have had to travel to England or Belfast for the surgery. It is almost 15 years since patients and doctors began calling for the introduction of deep brain stimulation to Ireland.

Beaumont Hospital Foundation is fundraising to support the cost of establishing the DBS service.

Over 5 days, from the 24th August to the 29th, I will cycle from Mizen to Malin via the Wild Atlantic Way.

Its 700km in distance and over 5000 meters of climbing. I will have the help of my other club members to help me along .I will do it! I just need to cycle .

I have no excuse – I don’t have a debilitating disease that stops me moving. SO MOVE YOUR BODY !

Help me raise funds from Beaumont Hospital DBS Service .

Make a real difference by helping them save lives !

Any little helps x THANK YOU X
