The City of Tomorrow performs in spaces of all sizes and types, from the echoing cavern of Trinity Wall Street Church in Manhattan to cozy gallery spaces in Pendleton, Oregon. Playing in such diverse spaces presents a challenge when designing a lighting element to accompany concerts. We have approached our friend, lighting designer Alexandra Deahl to help us solve this problem by creating a lighting system which can be:
- Infinitely customizable
- Easily replicated
- Controlled by the musicians from the stage
- Be completely self-contained and fit into two carry-on suitcases (!)
Alex Deahl, a veteran of innovative performance art and a graduate of the Master of Science in Light and Lighting program at the University College London Bartlett School of Architecture, has eagerly taken on this challenge, bringing ideas to the task we would never have considered. It is our hope that this will be the first of many lighting design kits she can construct, making a prototype that can be recreated and made accessible to any touring chamber group or acting ensemble interested in this type of performance element.
This lighting system will have it's first run during the City of Tomorrow's performances in Portland, Seattle, and New York in January and February of 2018, workshopping with Alex in Seattle for several days before the concerts begin. Once we are familiar with Alex's work, we hope to be able to use this equipment in various customizations, for many years. This crowdfunding campaign is meant to pay Alex for her time in designing and workshopping this lighting design and to pay for materials we will need to create it.
