Theatre Crude is a theatre company based in Oklahoma City, founded by Jenny and Adam Brand. We are a non-profit company with a mission to provide a supportive and open environment for the growth and development of the theatre community by encouraging artists and audiences to take risks, develop new ideas and test the limits of their potential. In other words: we aim to enrich the lives of the people of Oklahoma through performance art.
In the fall of 2019, Theatre Crude will host its first annual fringe festival in Oklahoma City. The festival is a two week event that will feature 10 different companies, based locally and nationally. Each company will perform their own production five times over the course of the two weeks with each performance lasting about one hour. With performances starting every 90 minutes, it will be possible for a person attending the festival to see up to 8 shows in a single day! The goal is to cultivate an environment of adventure, exposing patrons to as many different genres and styles of performance as possible.
The reason Jenny and Adam want to bring this annual event to Oklahoma City is because a fringe festival is an excellent way to develop talent, generate community, and encourage personal and professional growth. Developing artists, writers, performers and producers get the opportunity to see what it takes to run a theatre company by building their team and making a production audience ready, all without the headache of boring administrative tasks like permitting and insurance. Audiences also get a low cost sampler of different styles of performance that they may not have been exposed to previously. Perhaps they don’t like what they see, at least they didn’t spend three hours on it; then again, perhaps they will discover something new to love, and it only took one hour of their time.
Fringe is also a reason to gather and celebrate. We hope to create an atmosphere of inclusion and inspiration that will captivate and motivate the local population. It is easy to get overwhelmed with daily obligations and lose yourself and your passion to the grind of living from one duty or crisis to the next. The fringe festival is a time that can be set aside, a place where a person can take a breath, see something interesting and then take the time to talk about it with others. Theatre Crude believes that sharing experiences can reignite purpose and joy.
All aspirations and grand ideas aside, the purpose of this GoFundMe is to raise funds. So what will your donation pay for? Our funding comes from three main places: a small production fee that we charge our participants up front, a percentage of box office revenue, and ad sales in our printed program. Fortunately, this means we can become self sustaining. Unfortunately, this means we do not have upfront cash to get the ball rolling. Your support will help us secure a venue, acquire the appropriate permits, see to our legal fees as we make our way to 501(c)3 status, and otherwise bridge the gap in income until the opening of the festival. Beyond that, your contribution will serve as the foundation for the functionality of the festival for years to come.
