The Valdez Family in Belize

Donation protected
Mike Fitzpatrick and I (Caryn Self Sullivan) are asking for your help.

Last year I introduced Joan & Mike Fitzpatrick to a friend and former colleague, Jose Luis Valdez, who lives in San Pedro Belize with his wife Esther. I worked with Luis when I was studying manatees and dolphins in Belize circa 2005 and have kept in touch with him ever since. When Mike and Joan purchased a vacation home in San Pedro last year, they befriended the Valdez family and are sponsoring their 11-year-old son, Jose Luis Jr.’s education. Junior is an exceptionally talented and smart young man. He just graduated with Honors from New Horizon Primary School and will start High School in the fall. School is not free in Belize. Mike and Joan are covering his tuition and books and I’ve sent him the laptop computer necessary for his continued academic success. The Valdez’s also have a 3-year-old son, Dylan, and are expecting a third child in September. Between COVID and the inflationary crisis occurring, they have fallen on hard times and are in desperate need of financial support to get through the coming months and Esther’s pregnancy.

Jose Luis is a dedicated and hardworking man trying to support his family with his welding job at Public Works. With rising costs and pregnancy expenses, they have fallen behind. Mike just informed me that they are being evicted from their 12x12 one room dwelling, they are going without proper food and are basically living on beans and rice. Esther has a long-term a medical condition, but they are unable to pay for needed medical care. All this is having a deleterious impact on her pregnancy. Unfortunately, the government of Belize is unable to provide for basic needs such as food, shelter and medical care and local church groups are stretched to the maximum and are unable to meet the growing demand.

In addition to supporting Junior’s education, Mike and Joan are in Belize now and are advising the family financially, helping them find suitable housing, helping them find a local food bank, and helping Esther get the medical care she needs.

We are asking for your help. Mike and I have set up a donation fund with the goal of $6,000 USD to help them through this difficult time. This will enable them to clear their debts, find suitable housing for a family of 5 and cover the medical costs from the pregnancy. We ask that you consider making a contribution to help this dear family through these difficult times.

We are grateful for any contribution you can afford!
