The Red Ribbon Skirt Project

Donation protected

Tanisi (Hello) All,

First of all, We would collectively like to tell you a bit about our purpose.....

We are a group of Iskwewak living in Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton), who are trying to raise awareness and provide some sort of comfort to the families that have Missing and/or Murdered Relatives. We are seeking these funds to make  and gift 150 Red Ribbon Skirts/Shirts for those who grieve their lost loved ones. This is only one small gesture, but it will allow these families to know they have the support of the city, province, world etc. Some of these families have/will never have the closure they so need but, we can come together as a Community to support them in their journey!

To assist in this, at this time, any donation is acceptable. No matter the amount, small or big.
This would help provide us with more material (Red Cloth, Ribbons, Thread, Vinyl for Handprints to go on the skirts, etc).
- It will help purchase bus tickets as many of our volunteers travel by Transit and would help alleviate costs
- Provides: Snacks and Water to Volunteers

We are extending our project to Indigenous Men and Boys as they deserve to be recognized and honoured as well.

Please note: Some of the statistics of MMIWGM2S+.
* Indigenous Women and Girls are five times more likely to experience violence than any other population in Canada and this violence tends to result in more serious harm.

* Indigenous women make up 16% of all female homicide victims, and 11% of missing women, even though Indigenous people make up 4.3% of the population of Canada.

* Violence against Indigenous Women and Girls is systemic and a National Crisis that requires urgent, informed and collaborative action.

* Current public data on MMIWG2ST+ over-simplifies and under-represents the scale of the issue, yet still demonstrates a complex and pervasive pattern of violence against Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit and/or Female Identifying, who are often targeted because of their gender and Indigenous identity.

* The 2014 RCMP Operational Overview notes that police recorded 1,017 incidents of Aboriginal female homicides between 1980 and 2012 and 164 missing Aboriginal female investigations dating back to 1952. There have been a number of reports indicating numbers are significantly higher. From 2001 to 2014 the average rate of homicides involving Indigenous female victims was four times higher than that of homicides involving non-Indigenous female identifying victims.

As you can see this is a global pandemic in which events such as this can bring more awareness as well as support to those affected. With the gifting of these Ribbon Skirts and Shirts, we are able to invite families out to honour their loved ones on May 5, 2021 in Edmonton,AB for National Awareness Day of Missing and Murdered (Also known as Red Dress Day)

** Some of the funds will go directly to support Bear Clan Beaver Hills House and family members in the Search for a sister, Billie Wynelle Johnson, who went missing in Edmonton on Christmas Eve 2020. Her family deserves justice and could most definitely use the support in finding her. There is no help from any law enforcement so we as a Community must take the initiative to bring her home.

The search is taking place on Weekends until she is found and further details on how YOU can support this on-going active search party, can be found by clicking the link and joining: https://www.facebook.com/groups/434001611379287/

We have all been affected in some way and want to extend healing to our relations.

Aiy-Hiy for your consideration in the project.
