A New, Disability-Friendly Bus for Kibera, Kenya

Donation protected
For children with disabilities, it’s nearly impossible to navigate the slippery, muddy roads of Kibera, an informal settlement – or slum – in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mr. Stanley has made it his mission to drive kids with special needs to school who couldn't get there otherwise.

Stanley's story was first shared on Al Jazeera English by journalist Katie G. Nelson. The outpouring from wellwishers has been enormous.

Nelson set up this page to raise funds for a new, wheelchair accessible school bus for the children of Kibera. It would be the only disability-friendly school bus in Kenya's capital, and perhaps, the entire country.

Stanley's current bus is old, dilapidated and unsafe. It lacks seatbelts or a wheelchair ramp. It even broke down while Nelson was filming the story.

As one parent of a disabled child told me, "transportation is freedom." Together, let's bring the gift of dignity and freedom to all parents and students in Kibera, Kenya with a new bus for Stanley.

*Funds will be delivered in coordination with Stanley and the Mary Rice Centre school for children with disabilities in Kibera.
