The Next 14 Months

Friends and Family, I need your help!

In the last few months, my financial support has dropped dangerously low. I need an additional $2800 for the rest of the year and $16,800 for next year so I could continue to stay in Uganda.

I have been thinking about what I should do and what I can do to supplement the support I receive monthly from family and friends. One obvious answer is to go back home and find a “real job.” However, after attending one of our partners, the GEM Foundation’s ground-breaking ceremony yesterday, I realize how important it is and how much I want to stay here to see our projects come to fruition

Explaining our work is boring at times. Instead of being at the front line feeding the poor and caring for orphans, we stay behind our desk and stare at our monitors all day. However, by doing that, we provide architectural and engineering services to communities where such services are unavailable and/or inaccessible. We want to see people’s lives transformed through design.

The GEM Foundation, the project that broke ground yesterday, “is a home in Uganda for children with special needs who have been abandoned, orphaned or abused.” All of their children have varying special needs, which include: Cerebral Palsy, Hydrocephalus, Brain Trauma, Autism, Down Syndrome and Epilepsy. Currently, they have 40 precious children living in a two-story building in the center of Kampala. The new GEM village sits on an 88-acre site an hour outside of Kampala and it’ll be an accessible campus where all the children can play outside, learn new things, be fed, and thrive. In this first phase, we are building four new homes and a clinic.

I want to stay here so I could continue to work for ministries like GEM. A shelter is a basic human need. With the resources and technology we have today, no one should need to worry about being protected from the elements, finding safe drinking water, or living in darkness. Unfortunately, that’s the reality for many. What about schools for the children and hospital for the sick? The environment in which we inhabit influences the way we think, work, rest, and play today. In turn, it changes our future. We can provide a brighter future for the less-fortunate and transform communities. Will you help me?
