The Middle Island Penguin Project

The Middle Island Penguin Project (MIPP) is a world first conservation project that has been running since 2006. The project inspired the movie ‘Oddball’. Italian sheep dogs (Maremmas) are used to protect a locally threatened colony of little penguins on Middle Island in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia. The project has been highly successful with no foxes found on Middle Island while the dogs are there protecting the colony.
The MIPP generally receives most of its funding through an interactive, educational Meet the Maremma experience. This is a one-hour tour run during the summer and the money generated pays to care for the dogs. Unfortunately, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to run our regular tours this summer. Without the revenue from tours, the MIPP will struggle to have the funds needed to cover the maremma expenses.
All funds raised will go towards providing training and care for the guardian dogs, maintaining their housing and covering the cost of transporting dogs to and from Middle Island. It will also provide the funds needed for the ongoing care of the retired guardian dog Tula and soon to be retired Eudy who protected the penguins for over 8 years.
Any contributions would be greatly appreciated. We have chosen the amount of $25000 as this is the amount that we depend on that comes from running the tours. We very much appreciated your support.
