The last of the desert-adapted zebra!

My name is Mayian. I'm 11 years old and have spent most of my life in Samburu national reserve in north Kenya where my parents work with Save the Elephants.

I love anything that's linked to horses, and in Samburu we're lucky to have the special desert-adapted Grevy's zebra as neighbours. They are by far the most beautiful zebra in Africa, with big round ears, powerful bodies, and elegant, densely-packed stripes. But sadly there are only about 3,000 of them left in the wild so they are considered highly endangered.

The terrible drought that has plagued us for the last three years in Kenya has impacted hard on wildlife and people alike. Grevy's Zebra have suffered terribly from hunger with many of their foals dying. So I want to raise a pound for each one to donate to the amazing Grevy's Zebra Trust, who are buying truckloads of nutritious hay to provide emergency feeding for the zebra during this desperate time.

I made a zebra sculpture out of chicken wire, plaster of Paris and recycled kanga materials to highlight why Grevy's zebra are different and special, then took a picture of it among some common zebra (Burchell's zebra). But they're not that common either any more - there are only about a million left in the whole of Africa. Yet for every 300 Burchell's zebra, there's only one of my friend the Grevy's Zebra.
