The KCK Organic Teaching Gardens Need You

Mark Manning’s miraculous work with the KCK Organic Teaching Gardens is in need of our support.

For over 20 years The KCK Organic Teaching Gardens have been teaching about gardening in the KCK Public Schools.

Located at seven schools, The KCK Organic Teaching Gardens have built organic raised bed gardens directly on the school grounds of three Middle Schools: Rosedale Middle School, Argentine Middle School and Carl B Bruce Middle School; four Elementary Schools: Frank Ruston Elementary, Banneker Elementary, Quindaro Elementary, and M E Pearson Elementary.  All are in Kansas City, Kansas USD #500. As Garden Coordinator,
Mark conducts each and every workshop.

“Each year we collaborate with 1500 students, between K through 8th grades, and 31 different teachers, with a total of 55 classes, to conduct 9 months of workshops that include: Planting and Harvesting Fall, Spring and Summer Gardens, learning about the Parts of a Seed and the Parts of a Plant, Composting and Worms, the Multiculturalism of the Garden, George Washington Carver and the history of Sweet Potatoes, Salsa, Trees and Tree Planting, Bees, Insects and Spiders.  Workshops involve preparing food that is harvested from the garden for students to eat, reading from garden literature, and connecting students to their own classroom curriculum benchmarks.”

But this is the most important part: In August of 2020, due to COVID-19, this program lost their financial support partner who had taken them on in January 2020. Even without funding, and with garden coordinator Mark Manning working entirely PRO BONO, they have continued on: building a new 18 bed garden at Carl B Bruce Middle School in September 2020; Harvesting fall gardens in 2020; and donating thousands of dollars worth of food back to the communities around these schools.

“In May of 2021 we had a small Go Fund Me to raise funds to buy seeds, plants and supplies to plant all seven so sites so that when students returned to school in August, their gardens would be thriving.  We have already conducted 165 classes and workshops so far this year, harvesting over 2000 pounds of sweet potatoes!”

That’s where you come in: to conduct all these workshops, and to purchase their supplies, they need our funding help. We can do this!

Please play a part to help continue this incredibly successful project that teaches children living in food deserts just where food comes from, how to survive, and grow their own food. Your donation will make a huge difference in the lives of so many young people in need for generations to come.
