The Ignite Africa Campaign is focused on providing access to STEM education to 200 less privileged children in underserved communities in Lagos, Nigeria. The project involves restoring vulnerable young people back to school and developing a community based STEM innovation center where beneficiaries can gain access to valuable skills in science and technology such as coding, software development, UI/UX design, analytical skills, communication skills and more. The Ignite Africa Campaign is the first step to breaking the cycle of poverty that these communities live in as it arms the future generation of these communities with the right knowledge and skills to access greater opportunities in life.

Why does it matter?

An estimated 13.2 million children in Nigeria are currently out of school. According to UNICEF, 1 in every 5 of the world’s out of school children is in Nigeria. This is a great danger to the collective destiny of the nation and a wake up call to all responsible stakeholders to take action and deliver the basic rights of these children, maximize the strength of their numbers and prevent the threats that inaction would cause.

Over the past 3 years, Back to School Africa has been working in remote and underserved communities and we come across these children daily and even those who are already in school but are not learning effectively because of the poor quality of education. Through our partnership with various socially responsible organizations and individuals, we have provided education and other welfare support to 2000 children across Nigeria and provided educational scholarships to 234 others into primary and secondary schools.

There is a dire need for stronger collaborations to achieve impact at a larger scale and to improve intervention to create more awareness in reducing the number of out of school children in remote ad vulnerable communities through the provision of scholarships, increased government and public support, encouragement of innovative thinking and life long skills through STEM education and the use of a model that encourages youth participation by volunteerism.
