The Goodson Twins

This page was made to benefit our good friends Alex and Nicole Goodson and their family. On June 23, 2017, Ryder and Wyatt Goodson were born, and the family was doing well. After being home for only 12 days, Alex and Nicole noticed the twins weren't feeding quite as well as they should've been. Just to be sure, they called their doctor to see if there was any reason to worry. The doctor - thankfully being a cautious man - told them to head to the ER just in case. Soon after they arrived, it was discovered that the twins were displaying symptoms of an Enterovirus: Coxsackie b5. This virus is suspected to be responsible for several cases of SIDS. Things quickly took a turn, and within a short time, both boys were on life support via ECMO (http://www.chop.edu/treatments/extracorporeal-membrane-oxygenation-ecmo) and ventilators.
-During the next week, Alex and Nicole went through a parent’s worst nightmare: everyday turned into a battle to live for the twins. This was more apparent than ever on a night when Alex and Nicole were awoken to the sounds of doctors and nurses crowding into their room to start compressions and resuscitation on Wyatt, who had coded. While hopes remained high, the doctors explained that if Ryder and Wyatt remained on ECMO much longer, the odds were simply not in their favor...
Thus, the next week turned into a waiting game for friends and family while the twins did their best to survive and recover. In a miraculous turn of events, Ryder and Wyatt's vitals started to improve and Doctors were ready to begin trying to ween them off ECMO. In amazingly short order, the twins were off ECMO and their ventilators, in a matter of days! Through the grace of God, an amazing team of practitioners, friends, and family these two little guys are giving everyone a miracle day-by-day. While the road to recovery is sure to be long, things look better than they have in weeks.
While visiting Ryder and Wyatt at hospital, we could not help but notice the many sacrifices the family was also making to help battle alongside Ryder and Wyatt: the cost of parking, meals, long distance travel for the family, many sleepless nights, and time off work. Watching this amazing family rally together for the twins has inspired us to help alleviate the unseen toll this battle is inevitably taking on the family. Those of us who have had to undergo any type of serious hospital visit knows that the last thing you want to think about when you are helping someone battle illness or recover yourself is the bill or how in the world you will begin to pay it. Even with insurance the cost of this battle is growing each day: According to an accepted 2009 study, "The mean estimated cost for the ECMO procedure was 73,122 USD (SD 34,786) and median 62,545 USD (range: 34,121-154,817)" (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/26760033_Cost_of_extracorporeal_membrane_oxygenation_evidence_from_the_Rikshospitalet_University_Hospital_Oslo_Norway). This means that at best, the ECMO procedure likely costs approximately $34,000 per patient. Correlating studies put total hospitals cost around $60,000 (for just ONE of the boys) for just two weeks of treatment. We're sure the Goodsons likely hit their insurance deductible on day 1 but we in the course of what looks to be at least a 3-4 week hospital stay, there are many procedures not covered and a big bill is certainly still coming their way.
Our goal with this page is NOT to put a dent in those bills as we couldn't hope do so. Our goal is to give the Goodsons time to be together to help the twins recover, to help return some semblance of normalcy to their lives when they, through God's grace, bring the twins home. We are hoping that as the Goodsons all come home, we can give this money to help them forget some of the costs (parking, meal, travel, lost work) while they work through the adjustment of a very new schedule and life together. We are hoping to replenish their funds for food, diapers, babysitting, consultations, time-off for appointments, and any unforeseen fees or expenses in the weeks ahead to prepare for the bringing the twins home.
Having only just become parents in January of 2016 with the birth of their first child, Norah Grace, who has been staying at home with Grandma and Grandpa, Alex and Nicole have shown us that it takes a special kind of parent to be strong for their family when times are tough. Alex and Nicole are amazingly kind, hard-working, and providing parents and would NEVER ask for such a show of support. We would just have our hearts filled if Alex and Nicole did not feel pressured to jump straight back into working overtime to pay for theirs bills if we were able to provide them with our monetary goal after they bring Ryder and Wyatt home. We have all been there when a friend or family member is going through a tough time and while you want to help and send your love but sometimes we just fall short of knowing HOW to do so. We loved the idea of starting a GoFundMe page for them because it allows those of us who cannot be there for at the hospital or babysitting, dog sitting, or housesitting to still help out the family. If Alex and Nicole are able to take even a few more days off work, or bring a big meal home for the family with our donations, we feel we could help give their family the greatest gift we could think of: time together.
